Be careful with the wire polarities with the new pump. They are labeled. You'll need a bit of wire to attach the ground from the pump to the original ground point on the assembly. Crimp on connectors work fine here, just make sure you use a good crimping tool. Attach the new pump to the pickup tube with nylon ties. The new strainer is not L-shaped like the VDO unit but a straight unit that fits on the bottom of the new pump. You'll notice that the strainer will hit the bottom of the tank well before the assembly is fully seated. Just let the strainer bend out of the way and insert the assembly the rest of the way. It's possible that there are more suitable L-shaped strainers that will fit better but I haven't investigated this.
It may be prudent to replace the tank gasket with a new one.
And last but most important BE CAREFUL, and work outside with plenty of ventilation. Take your time and admire the results of your labor.
