the one you discribed on the 86. Mine is a 86 735i with a ZF 4HP22EH transmission. On the round setup you have a throttle position potentiomenter that sends a voltage signal to the transmission and tells it when to downshift and upshift. Max voltage through this device is 4.78 volts. Behind that is the idle control switch. This switch tells the idle control system when the throttle is in the rest position an turns on the idle control circut.

Hope this help. I am not sure but I think you only find this setup on the 86, 87 year cars with the 4HP22EH gearbox.
