The water pump is a fairly easy part to replace...
To make your life easier, start by removing the hood and the radiator. There is a drain on the radiator where the lower hose enters...use this to remove coolant.
Next, you will need to drain the coolant from the engine block...there is a 19mm(??) drain between the #5 and #6 cylinders, use this to drain the coolant.
After you have drained all the coolant, remove the fan from the water-pump and remove the belt from the alternator/water pump. You should now be able to locate all the 10mm bolts securing the pump to the block. When installing the new pump be sure that the gasket is installed properly and that you don't over-tighten the bolts...It is very easy to strip them.
To make the job easier, I would recommend purchasing the E28 5-Series Bentley repair manual. The E28 shares a drivetrain with the seven, and the Bentley manual is an indispensable resource.
Good Luck
