hi guys! I'm using my friends' computer this afternoon and will try to look in later for responses. So I couldn't live without my 7 and bought another one. :> It stranded me on my first trek into Boston right on the expressway during rush hour traffic, without tools... not that I really know what I'm doing :>

okay so here's the scoop
1984 733i, auto, 205K miles. I only know that previous owner said there was some kind of smoking & shop tried to repair it. I smelled residual electrical smoky smell, but it went away. Friend pulled out inappropriate left over speaker/amp wires from trunk to radio & found antenna wire to be used for amp and bare. taped it up.
Registerd it Monday, went for inspection Tuesday and then on highway in 70 degree temp about 70 miles away.

engine runs okay, put fuel injector cleaner in tank, filled it with high test & passed inspection, including emissions without a hitch. so 70 highway miles later there was a hesitation upon acceleration and then it just lost power. by power, I mean engine not electrical.

I turn key and hear the everything normal and starter, but no spark. Tested spark plug and there's no spark. Took wire from battery to coil still wouldn't start. Does this mean I should put another coil in from other car to test? Is there an obvious relay or other component I should probe? It doesn't smell like fuel is getting through, but then again being fuel injection we don't usually smell it.

Oh, only dash light that's on is the yellow triangle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Marguerite

and for those of you who wonder why I'm not online. I threw the modem into the wall and retreated to a rotary dial telephone. it's nice :>

try swapping the coil, try the main relay. if you have access to a brain swap that. do this sequentially, not all at once. you are a neo luddite with a rotary phone. cant say as i blame you.

Hi Andy,
Tried swapping coil, main relay, actually all relays at fuse box & fuses... tested them that is. Only peculiarity was a wire from fuel tank to relay at fuse box that was not conducting properly. Meanwhile I should add that I swapped fuel pumps from one of my other cars and bought a fuel sending unit from Bavauto. The fuel pump now works. But I am so stumped and tired that I arranged to have car towed to the garage tonight. I'll likely feel inadequate when I find out what is really wrong with it... unless it's really a major electrical deal.

I used to sleep with keyboard on my belly to monitor my server... so no computers at this time is just fine with me. I'm almost human again! :>
thanks for your help. I at least feel like I'm on the right track. really frustrating. I don't have knowledge of relays under dash but heard them click on and off.
oh well it's up to the mechanic now.
thanks again.
enjoy your driving
Marguerite
