I have a 82 733i 5spd. with 217k. Everything works great except I am starting to have some problems with some of the power acc. running slowly & sticking, I hope they just need some lube. The HVAC unit on mine is the crazy auto temp control thing, it works but is slow to change from Hot to Cold sometimes.
The defrost only setting is the default if something else has failed within the unit.
