HVAC: How could BMW do this? (archive)

Is there any way to fix / retrofit the HVAC system without spending $2,500?
With the system of servos, microswitches, vacuum this and that, I don't even
know if it's worth keeping the car. My car (an L7) was $43,000 in 1986.
How the hell could BMW put a defective HVAC system AND a crappy defective
tranny in this car and charge that kind of money?

Any comments/suggestions/flames are appreciated.
