Enough editorializing - two comments:
(1) I've seen where Zionsville Autosport has offered some 7's with retrofitted Euro (cable control) HVAC - they might be a good source of info and parts
(2) What is your system doing/not doing? From my research on the various 7 boards, if your pushbuttons and temp/volume wheels work, 95% of the vacuum problems are under the cowl - either the vacuum resorvoir tank/connecting nipple or (this is the case on my car, I've got the actuator blocked off for now) one of the fresh air actuators. Air flow to defrost only usually signals a vacuum leak, and again it's likely in one of these two places!
The factory manuals have an excellent description of the HVAC system. Armed with a $20 vacuum pump/gauge from Sears I was able to follow the step-by-step troubleshooting steps and diagnose the vacuum leak at the fresh air actuator .... might be worth considering.
Good Luck

Is there any way to fix / retrofit the HVAC system without spending $2,500?
With the system of servos, microswitches, vacuum this and that, I don't even
know if it's worth keeping the car. My car (an L7) was $43,000 in 1986.
How the hell could BMW put a defective HVAC system AND a crappy defective
tranny in this car and charge that kind of money?
Any comments/suggestions/flames are appreciated.
Thanks,
Hans
