Sorry for the delay, as I'm away from my home system while on vacation. Short of doing all the "static" tests like the inputs to the ECU, you end up at at SOME point needing a "known good part" as BMW puts it to try and run the car.
Checking the needed inputs like power, ground, and throttle , flywheel inputs, etc is very good, but if in the end you verify that all these seem to be there, then you need a Good used or new ECU to pop in and start up the car with.

As for the main chip, it depends on the production timeframe of the ECU. Early versions of the Motronic ECU had soldered in Chips, a few years later, BMW switched over to plug-in chips. You can contact DINAN directly for their expert advice via your part number on the outside of the unit to find out what your own case is. Think that '85 was the year that started the plug-in type chip, but it may have been later than that.
