There are occasional postings where drivers talk about their E23 real world mileage. I was wondering however what seems to effect the mileage the most and what difference a functioning O2 sensor might make.

In my experience, I get 20 mpg at an indicated 80mph in my '84 733 with a 3.49 rear and 205/70-14 tires, and an O2 sensor that has not been changed in several years. I got 25 mpg in my Euro spec '85 735 with 3.25 rear and 220/55-390 tires with no O2 sensor hookup.

The BMW technical data book says these cars can achieve 29 mpg and I actually wonder if my euro car could achieve this. First, I should probably try driving a steady 55 mph, but I don't know if I can do that. Second, should I hook up the O2 sensor.

Anyone have real world experience on the gas mileage effects of the O2 sensor? What is your experience?

Go to top of this page and click on Archive, then click on 2000 week 28, then down the page to O2 Sensor Output and Motronic Control-Grant 22:00 7/14/200 and read about the test and the related comments.

I have replaced my cat this week and will be conducting another test on an extented trip next week and hope to have results for the board soon after that time. My milage (735i 5 speed) is still around 21-22 MPG on long trips at highway speeds. Engine is factory stock with 310K miles.
