brake light check indicator (archive)

Just recently my check brake light indicator came on. So I checked my brake lights and the bulbs are good. I tried a different bulb and also cleaned the contacts on both sides (i.e. left and right rear brake lamps). The check indicator is still on. Normally this goes off when the brake pedal is pressed. Could it be a limit switch linked to the brake pedal? Any suggestions?
