Rear Differential Replacment, What Fits? (archive)

85 735i 5 Speed E-23. The rear differential is near the end of the its life. I want to replace the unit. What will fit? I have access to a 1986 535i and that car has a good usable rear differential. Will that unit fit in my 735i?

What other problems will I encounter with the removal and replacement process?

Ratios: Is there only two ratios, one for the 5 speed and one for the automatic transmission? From shopping around I am getting all kinds of ratios. Can anyone tell me what is available for ratios?
