I am getting alot of white smoke on start up of my '84 745i.
There is no water in the oil at this time. There doesn't seem to be a drop in performance either at this time. Could it just be the head gasket or is the head cracked? (fingers crossed that it is only the gasket)

Your right white smoke can indicate water/coolant in the cumbustion chamber. Yes a head gasket can leak such that fluid will leak into the cylinder. Did you do a cylinder pressure check? If so what were the readings? Also don't discount the posiblility that oil is leaking down the valve stems into the cylinder. But when this happens the smoke on start up is usually blue in color. Are you adding coolant? What happens if you run (for a test) without the pressure cap in place? Is the water temperature normal?
