It is your HVAC vacuum pump. You have a leak somewhere if it runs more than 45 seconds. Look for the leak as the pump will burn itself out if left running to long. This pump is quite expensive and sometimes hard to find.

Alas, I do not have any repair manual for the 86 735i (I am not sure if any exist?). Hence the what is this question...

When I turn the key to ignition on I hear a pump start up - it is quite loud. It is located just in front of the coollant reservoir. It is black and has a plastic shell.

I can also hear at when I am driving off or at idle. I can't make out the noise when 'cruising'.

Appreciate the help.
