Actually the SLK is much nicer than most of the test reports give it credit for.
It handles decently, and actually has good power with the supercharger. Unfortunately one cannot yet buy one with a manual transmission, but the folding hard top sold me on the car. My dad and mom liked the tradional safety aspect of the Mercedes marque as well knowing that I'd be unlikely to go for a Volvo!
As much as I like manual transmissions, I have to admit that in city driving and even in some of the stop-and-go freeway driving, an automatic is a blessing.
I actually wanted a Boxter, but my dad bought my car from a friend whose wife had only put 1700 miles on it. The 2000 model had some new color she liked better than the '99 Silver she had, so he had to dump the '99 to keep her happy with the 2000 model, so we got a great buy on it (under $40K) In retrospect, I like the SLK better than the Boxter.
Reference the Benz vs. the Bimmer, the newer Benz cars are less "old folks" than the older ones, though generally they lack a manual transmission option.
Certainly an M3 is more fun to drive than the SLK, but given the SLK is a hardtop, my chances of convincing my dad that I need a "real" coupe to replace the 745i would take better debating skills than I presently possess. The 745i I have is actually my mom's old L7 that I had equipped with a Metric Mechanic modified 745i driveline with a Getrag 265 5 speed, so it's pretty quick, though it is BIG. The manual isn't a good choice for the turbo because It only has about 30,000 miles on the chassis, but I can't seem to get more than 3000 miles out of the Guibo and center bearing and 10,000 miles out of a clutch. Just too much power I guess.
I am hoping if my grades this year are good enough and I do well enough on my LSATs to get into my dad's "Alma Mater" this year, he might pop for the M3 as a reward for my following in his footsteps. Then, I would, indeed, have the best of both Worlds!
Cheers!
