Sounds like a clutch pack for forward went bad. Thats why you still have reverse. Not much you can do about that except pull the transmission and replace the bad ones. Sorry for the bad news. I had this happen on a 3hp22.

As far as issues with your transmision these have a seal that can go bad and allow pressurized fluid into the clutch packs when you rev the motor at idle. Never do that if you can help it. There is a BMW TSB on the correct proceedure for doing a smog check on cars with these transmissions so the tranny is not damaged. Have you had it smogged lately or otherwise reved it in neutral? That could be the cause.

my tranny doesn't engage into gear any more. only reverse works. the car was driving fine and now nothing. I had drive it home in reverse. What could the problem be?
someone please help. the tranny was rebuilt less than 2 years ago. less than 20K miles ago. I read somewhere that there is something funny about these trannys.
