Just did the same thing on my '82 733. Probably the same set up. With the motor plugged in but not installed, push the button to the closed position (we'll call it "A"). If you push it again it will run for a short period...."B" (to open the back of the roof). When you determine "A", manually push the roof closed. Engage the motor buy installing the screws. Try it. If it dosen't totally close..open all the way, remove or loosen screws so motor drops down (disengeged) and manually move the sunroof just a bit, engage motor, repeat utill it is functioning perfectly. Hope this is a little clearer than mud for you.

I just got done redoing the sunroof on my '86 535 and am just getting it operational again. I noticed that the position of the limit switch/cam wheel on the motor assy must be in a certain attitude for the buttons to operate the motor correctly, ie. stopping at the correct position .
At what point must the cam wheel be positioned to start the sequencing correctly???
BTW, after a complete tear down and reassy of the sunroof and all it's parts, I am not afraid to tackle a sunroof problem again. I was really dreading tearing into this one, but it turned out just fine.
TIA,

Tom in PA
