I had a similar problem. It would rise and fall....sometimes stall. I found that a connector on the air flow meter in the air cleaner line was corroded. I took it apart, cleaned it....works perfect! It added power also. Hope this helps.

I have an '82 733i and it has an abnormal idle. It fluctuates for about 20-30 seconds when first started and then settles at exactly 1000 RPM and idles at a constant rate. Seems a little high to me. I know there are very few things you can adjuct with a Motronic system, anyone have any ideas?
