i am buying a 735ia 1986....the car is in a remarkable shape...i was literally drooling ...but when i took it for a test drive , i couldn't help noticing a noise coming from the back when the car is accelerating and turning from standstill. i am thinking maybe it's the driveshaft that's wearing out...the car has 170,000 KM and i would like to know if that's a common problem with the e23...is it expensive to fix ? or it may be a much more simple problem ??? please help !!!! tahnk you in advance.
The U-joints on the driveshafts are notorious for wear between 100k and up. There is also a Mid bearing on the driveshaft that can go and make a noise like a failing bearing or bushing. This can be replaced seprately from the rest of the driveshaft. If the driveshaft u-joints are the problem you will hear loud clunking noises upon upshifts and even more noticeable on downshifts. Not hard to replace but time somsuming. Buy a rebuilt one with normal serviceable U-joints. BMW doesn't make their u-joints serviceable. Hope this helps direct you in the right direction.
