The U-joints on the driveshafts are notorious for wear between 100k and up. There is also a Mid bearing on the driveshaft that can go and make a noise like a failing bearing or bushing. This can be replaced seprately from the rest of the driveshaft. If the driveshaft u-joints are the problem you will hear loud clunking noises upon upshifts and even more noticeable on downshifts. Not hard to replace but time somsuming. Buy a rebuilt one with normal serviceable U-joints. BMW doesn't make their u-joints serviceable. Hope this helps direct you in the right direction.Hi Brian , Thank you for your reply , but i don't think it's the U-joints because there is no clunking heard on the upshift or downshift. Do you agree that it's the drive shaft that's worn out ? because the noise is also associated to slight vibration and intermittence in power delivery....my fear is that the differential needs replacement. Anybody out there has any idea about what might be wrong ??? should i buy the car and ignore this problem or would it be better to search for another one....Again , thank you Brian and thanks in advance for whoever replies.
have a nice day.
