im installing a 82 745i motor into my 87 325e 4dr.why???because the 754 turbo has been a v8 killer for 10 years,an thats stock!!show me another stock 6cyl 4.7 liter motor from this time period???aside from the m5 no stock 6 cyl car comes near this one stock!!!shit i know how vette/mustang/z28/new car owners feel,when beaten by a foreign 6cyl,i felt the same way when beat by a rotery/or 4 cyl honda..thats why im transplanting this engine;;you would think that a 8cyl should have more hp than a 6cyl--6cyl more hp than 4cyl but thays not how it works..my 325 run very well with existing e30 motor/250,000m...far from stock this steet car has every bolt on in the book!!still my 0-60 times are slow,1/4m times 13-14.5's.great for a 4door car,enough to beat a stock 5.0 mustang/chevy...but turbocharged hondas??these present a problem in 0-60 an 1/4m..over 100mph 4cyl's dont stand a chance with me,as i can top out at 155mph...thats what ive done to 8cyl's also,passed them doing 135mph on the highway...is it the supieor handling?or an engine built to run over 100mph everyday for the life of the car?????needless to say v8's are not a problem,stock or not,most will not follow a stock bmw into a corner at 80-100mph...very few cars can!!my project comes from my need for more speed(to kick the ass of all 4-6cyl cars espicially hondas))turbocharging my engine would cost more than this engine transplant an not be as fast...i intend to fully work engine(bore block,port head,modify turbo15lbs))400hp+ expected,this with the stock cam??this should let me top out around 185-190??0-100 times as good as a ferrari???all from a old 6cyl engine,pretty impressive???still a dailey driver passing inspection...still looking totally stock,lowered a bit passing all you speed demons on the highway (8-10lbs) boost,then on weekends,to the track to beat up 4-8cyl cars in my class,just turn up the boost....believe it or not...........

My car is running a stock motor. The only mods I know of are a 3.45:1 diff in replacement of the stock 2.93:1 and a higher pressure fuel regulator and a K&N. I consider that pretty stock. The rear end is from a 733i. This car suffers from turbo lag, enhanced by US emmisions and I pulled up on the bumpers of 5.0's just toying with them and was right behind (I started to pass when he floored it and I followed pursuit) a 94-99 TA up to 80 from about 15mph. Then when he braked, I proceeded to severly out brake him even with a failing PS pump.(loss of power brake boost) By dropping off the Cats on this car you will easily get another 10-20 hp to an already underated 252hp. A turbo car is a different breed of animal, to naturally aspirated. There is so much available from so little. Also Torque is what makes the car accelerate not HP. This car creates nearly as much torque as the much larger displacement engines at a moderate 6psi.
I do think that the 745i is more powerful than the M6 at least has much more potential. The M6 has a higher HP rating but I think the M102 creates more torque. I am not saying it is faster, it just makes more power. It is still not a 1/4 mi. machine and I know I would lose any 1/4 mi. race with a pony car but on the freeway is a completely different story. At the track is a completely different story and this is a full size luxery sedan!

I have had a 733i w/ ??? mi. and my 745i has had the tranny rebuilt before I bought the car. I have never had or seen a problem with them. I think that for an automatic it shifts almost instantly in any gear and is smooth as silk. How many times have you read about the trannies failing, and warnings "DO NOT REV ENGINE IN PARK OR NEUTRAL AFTER SHIFTING FROM PARK". Yet some people still find a way. Change the fluid regularly and don't burn out the front clutch pack. Beat the crap out of it and enjoy! I also feel this way b/c the ZF 6-spd in the vette mentioned in the first reply has the tightest shortest throw I have ever felt. It was good in the early vipers too. The Borg-warner in the stangs and newer Camaro's and TA do not feel as good and the linkage has been especially horrible in every manual ford I have ever driven in my life.

Good, then we can agree that there are more efficient ways to create in excess of 300 HP and 300+ ft/lbs than 5.7 litres or 8 liters which I find to be an especially crappy piece of american engineering. I can't afford a new Bimmer until I graduate but I can afford a newer TA or Camaro now and I opted to by a 15 year old car because there are no american or Jap cars I could purchase with the same level of performance in rear drive layout for the money I spent on my 745i. And it seats 4 comfortably and has an interior you would expect to find in a Rolls Royce not in one of the fastest sedans made in the last 20 years.
