Experience with fan clutch too stiff (archive)

(Posting this to E24, E28, and E23 as we share the M30 motor):

Friends -

Curious if anybody has had to replace their fan clutch because it was 'over-cooling' - too 'stiff' rather than too 'loose', a common source of running hot. My E23 has always run to the left of center of temp gauge, with colder weather it takes quite a while to heat up. New H2O pump and thermostat last year, ran fine last winter ... temp gauge sender checks out OK.
