I had the Dinan suspension (sport lowering springs and Bilstein sport shocks) in my 86 E23 removed this week and the stock springs with new Boge gas shocks installed.
The owner/mehanic neglected to replace the bump stops in the front suspension and refuses to take responsibility. He says if I wanted the bump stops put back in I should have provided him with the originals or I should have requested that I wanted new ones. Does he have a point or should he have called me when he was reinstalling the original components and let me know that I needed bump stops? I feel for him to reinstall the factory suspension without all the factory parts is wrong (at least he could have communicated with me while he was doing this job). Currently I have a front suspension that could bottom out without any protection. He says he would have to remove the front suspension completely if I want bump stops installed (4 hours x $70/hr).
On another note, I notice that although this owner/mechanic charges $70/hour, he has two "assistants" that do much of the work for him. I noticed that one of the guys was attempting to install an incorrect oil filter in a 96 328i (it was NOT going to fit into the cannister and this guy was attempting to force it in). When I mentioned to him I didn't think that was the right oil filter for that car, he went back into the supply room and returned with another filter, which fit. Additionally I watched this same guy check the oil level in this same car with a dirty rag. He removed the dip stick, wiped it with the dirty rag, and then reinserted the dipstick. As he removed the dipstick a second time, he "braces" himself again the engine of the car with his left hand. The only problem is that his left hand has the dirty rag in it, and since the engine itself was dirty, the rag now picks up even MORE dirt. He then proceeeds to wipe the dipstick again with this rag before reinserting it back into the car. This guy was a COMPLETE idiot, and the fact that customers are paying the owner $70/hour for this kind of incompetence is really disappointing. Suffice to say I will never be going to this shop again.
Comment/suggestions would be welcomed.
P.S. - this Dinan Stage 1 suspension that was removed from my car is now for sale. It is in perfect condition. I don't believe Dinan sells E23 suspensions anymore (confirm this, I could be wrong). The price paid was $999. I'm open to any offers.
