If I change out the 4 speed in my 78 733i to a 5 speed, is there anything that is going to bite me? Is the 5 speed box longer in length so I will need the 5 speed driveshaft? Also, I still need to buy a hub that goes on the front of the crankshaft of this car (balancer bolts to the hub) - mine cracked, does anyone have one laying around? Thanks!

The 5 speed will absolutely need the matching driveshaft to work, otherwise you must have yours custom shortened by a specialty shop and re-balanced...expensive compared to just the standard swap.

OK, thanks. I just acquired a junker 82 528e 5 speed, the Bently book says that in 82 they used the heavy duty tranny so I'm hoping that will fit. You don't suppose I would be luck enough that the 5228e driveshaft is the one I need - I assume the 7 series has a longer wheelbase, is that right? I also just acquired an 82 733i with an automatic that might just be a parts car, would that driveshaft work? I guess the question is does it have to be a 7 series 5 speed drive shaft? Thanks again!!!
