Sounds like worn U-joints. Putting it in reverse loads the drivetrain in the opposite direction and any looseness such as worn u-joint makes a clunk. (could be cv-joint but less likely).Just look over your drivetrain carefully.

1983 733i Automatic

I've noticed a slight 'cluck' when giving it some gas after shifting into reverse to back up (sounds like its' coming from the rear of the car)

Doesn't do it every time and I emptied out all my stuff from the trunk so it's not a toolbox or anything moving around.

No problems at all in forward gears.

Any ideas? I'm going to look at the rear axle for any visible worn/loose parts...
