I think I have a blown head gasket, how can I tell for sure? Compression test?

A compression test will reveal a blown head gasket but might not detect a small leak. If your water pump and fan clutch are good and there are no leaks or air in your coolant system (including the heater) but the car runs hot at sustained higher rpm (3000 +) you could have a head gasket leak. You can also look for milky colored stuff under your oil cap and on the oil dipstick - this would be an indication of water getting into the oil passages via a gasket leak.
