Compression test can tell if the leak is severe. But you have to compare the numbers to the good cyliners to be sure if there is a problem. Another test is a leak down test compression test. Check for water in the oil. Look under oil cap. Check dipstick. Drain oil into pan. Remove the valve cover and inspect oil coating on cam and valve rocker arms. Check for oil in the coolant. What is the temperature gauge reading. Combustion gases into the water jacket will raise the coolant temperature. On severe leaks you can see the air bubbles come into the overflow tank when the engine is running.
