Im not absolutly sure, but of the 2 German cars Ive owned with electric central locking (93 corrado SLC & 85 735) both locks worked fine with no battery & just key input....you loose the central locking of course. Did you simply try using the key?

I havent encountered this particular problem on my e23 when locking/unlocking with no power but i have heard it is a problem on the later models. I have heard that the key works but it must be turned very very very very hard, almost to the point of breaking it, but it will open by turning the key. Try it, just dont break your key.

Have you noticed that car locks it selves when when battery is almost dead. Once I left radio on on my 728i 83 and ofcourse keys are then in the ignition. When I came to the car and just before I tryit to open drivers door central locking system locked every single lock in the car. I Which I would came back ten seconds earlier. I opened doors by removin left rear light and then I opened the trunk by turning the trunk lock form inside.
