In Reply to: Need four Michelin TRX 220/55 HR 390 tires, help! posted by Jim Agnew on December 20, 2000 at 18:30:43:

Without entering into the debate of TRX vs. other tires...

I have an 85 735 and had the same problem until about a month ago. Costco told me Michelin told them they were discontinuing the TRX. Whether or not they're still available and whether or not they're still the best tire for the car, I decided to put 15" rims on it. At a poster's suggestion, I posted on the E34 board that I wanted to buy a set of rims. I had three offers in three days and ended up buying a nice set of 5 factory, 15", bottle caps from a mid-90's five series for $200 (same bolt pattern). The rims look great (makes it look like a later model) and feel great-especially since they had some worn, but usable Firestone Firehawks on them (very sticky). Put some 225/60/15 tires on for $70 dollars per tire instead of $125 and it pays for itself pretty quick. And as one poster put it, I feel better knowing if I have a problem, I can get a 15" tire anywhere, quickly.

BTW...your heater core is going to cost you dearly if you don't do it yourself (been there too). Between the tires, the heater and the high mileage, you might be better off donating the car to a charity for a good tax write-off.

The TRX's on my wife's 1986 BMW 735i are almost bald, and I cannot find any replacements - America's Tire has no TRX's in the USA and none on the way over from Europe; Costco tells me the same. I'm afraid to call Coker ($$$$). I'm told that an Avon Turbospeed will fit, but my local Avon dealer doesn't know anything about that. Help!

Barring finding replacements, does anyone have some slightly used TRX's?

Barring that, what am I bid on a good-running, daily driver, shiny-paint 1986 BMW 735i with 231,000 miles, with recent NOS tranny & BEHR radiator replaced, needs only a heater core (and tires...)? I'm in Rocklin, California (near Sacramento). Car was originally owned by a Burger King exec. in Chattanooga, TN, then a QA Engineer in Las Vegas, then me. It has been well-cared for. NO RUST!
