There is indeed a clutch in there. Mercedes also use Hirschmann antennas and we see problems like that all the time on the older cars. There is an adjustment for the clutch, but I'm not sure if it's the same on the BMW as it is on the model of antenna used in MBs. I'll look on my 745i and see what I can come up with.
