What I didn't expect to pay:
The heater core was bad...fixed it myself for $200 instead of paying $1,200 to have the shop do it. Tires were metric (in between a 14 and 15" wheel) TRXs which are expensive and are being discontinued...I bought a set of used E34 wheels for $200 and will pay $75/tire instead of $125/tire. The exhaust rotted from the inside out...I replaced it from collector to tailpipe myself for $300 instead of paying the shop $1,000. Radio died...replaced it myself and put a CD changer in the trunk too for $200, instead of paying the shop $500.
Other problems I've heard about:
Power steering/front-end problems; auto transmissions failing; un-replaceable u-joints; AC and HVAC control problems.
All of these problems are very expensive to have done by a shop. My experience is that there is usually a way to save a lot of money doing it yourself. AND THANK GOD FOR THIS BOARD!!!!! These folks will help you through these problems like few mechanics can.
Handling/performance:
I love my 735 for my 70 mile per day commute. It's fast, fun, roomy, comfy and looks sharp. I recently bought a 2002 because I wanted a BMW that would be more fun to 'toss around'. While it's kinda fun to drive, I now appreciate my 7 more than ever. I'll be selling the 2002. I'd rather do donuts in the company parking lot in the 7. Sometimes I think a 5 series would be nice, but have never driven one (couldn't afford a fast one anyway). I drove an 80's 3 series once and was totally unimpressed (reminded me of a heavy Nissan Sentra).
Bottom-line:
I don't like the 2002 or 3 series. I couldn't afford a desirable 5 series. The 7's are cheap to buy and they're ALL expensive to maintain. Find one that hasn't been abused and plan on paying for the repairs noted here and elsewhere on the board. Be nice to the people on this board and they'll help you out.
Enjoy, Korby
Imight buy someday.
