It sounds like the micro switch located between the two control wheels (temp and fan speed) is bad. This happened to my 83 733i about 6 or 7 years ago. Dealer wanted to replace the whole cartridge for big$ but one of the mechs told me to just replace the switch. Pull the radio out to undo the cartridge which pulls out as a unit. The switch is between the wheels. Radio Shack had the switch for $1. If I remember right, I had to remove a little metal lever from the new switch. . .its been a while.
Hello all once again, I have a 1985 735i that I am selling to my sister pretty soon. The car is garaged and about every 3 days I go across the street to start her up. I bought this car from a fellow BMWCCA memberand he put quite a bit of recent mechanical work into the car; heater core, power steering pump, exhaust catalyst, wheel bearings, brakes, radiator, assorted other items,( ignition wires, plugs and oxygen sensor ) one is the unit that houses the buttons for heat, a/c, etc... He thought he had fixed this little gremlin prior to selling it; the dial for the fan speed acts up occasionally, if you increase or go to shut it off, at times it won't come back on. If the fan is already on ( the small green light illuminated ) and I go to either increase or decrease, it shuts off. I have to fiddle with the dial, back and forth, at times I just give up and all of a sudden the green light is back on, indicating the fan is on. Having owned a 1967 1800ti and 7 2002's ( number 8 on the way soon, actually it may be a 1600 ) I'm not that familiar with this 7 series. It has 145,000 miles on it, is super clean ( originally a California car ), and runs like a top, wondering if anyone has any tips on where the problem may lie, thanks, Tim.
