you say "then the abs light goes on and the car stop's normally". The abs light is meant to go out not on when the abs system is working!

right, the abs light goes on, indicating the abs system is no longer functioning, then the brakes work as i expect. this could be due to the lack of abs or it could be due to the light going off after several stops.
