My father-in-law had alternator failure on freeway. Had to tow to local Mechanic and he replaced it out. Then drove home and immediately started having tranny problems. When in drive it would start to stall then engine would rev and become disengaged. However if I shift to a different gear ( 1st, 2nd, or 3rd) and then go back to drive the tranny engages with no noticeable problems and stays in gear.

The question we have is: When an alternator is changed out could there be any other part (electrical or computer related) that would need to be changed. Also is the computer some how related in any way to the operation of the transmission. We think the replacement alternator was not installed properly and that the Mechanic may have not reconnected something properly or out of sequence.

We hope the transmission does not need replacing. It just seems too coincidental that the transmission would show problems right after the alternator was changed. There has to be some kind of cause-effect relationship between changing out an alternator and transmission problems Anyone's help here would be greatly appreciated.

Also, we plan on taking car in to dealer next week. We would like to just know if something else should be looked at and if the alternator was not installed properly we should have the original Mechanic who replaced it make things right to us. His bill was $800.00 !!

Thanks and I hope someone knows something about this problem that could share something.

Bill R
