What are the symptoms of a bad air flow sensor? My 83 733i w/196k will not run/barely run, blows black smoke and gas fouls a set of new plugs in a couple of minutes. What are the resistance values suppose to be on the sensor? I get a resistence that starts to go up as I open the flap with my finger, then the values go down, up, and all over the place. I've replaced the fuel filter and tested the pressure, good at about 30 psi, replaced plugs 3 times, replaced coil, dist. cap&rotor, plug wires, cleaned all connections of all wires, even swapped the main computer module, all with no change in symptom. Current plugs are oem Bosch WR9LS, any ideas?

What shape is your battery in? When my was going south it caused the mixture to go rich. There was juice enough to crank the engine, but it wouldn't start and acted like it was flooded.
