Anyone know the voltage at the starter motor solenoid terminal at crank time, trying to determine what the normal should be. Also the voltage at the battery side of the starter terminal during crank would be useful.

I may be up for a new battery - any suggestions on type or what to stay away from?

Battery voltages should be as follows:
Battery at rest, full charge: 12.8v +/-
Voltage during cranking: 11.5v +/-
Charging at idle: 13.5v +/-
Charging at speed: 14.3v +/-
Your exact readings may very slightly due to age and condition of battery and components, but the variation is what you're looking for.

Good Luck,

Tom M in PA

Thanks Tom - I ended up replacing the battery $145 ($70US) - but if the charging system is crap then the problem will return. Then I will have 2 batteries that I can use!!
