I think a lot of people on the E23 board are fed up with invader's constant preaching about how bad the E23s are. He had a bad experience, well too bad! I know of a few people that will never (and I mean NEVER) consider buying another BMW because of bad experiences with (eek!) E30 and E36 3 series cars. There are others that have had great experiences.
Having sold my 1990 immaculate 325is (16" BBS RS, H&R with Bilsteins, Jim C chip, etc.) to make room for my dad's 1984 733i in my garage, I can add my .02:
My 325is was definitely more fun to drive than the 7 (it weighed almost 1000lbs less) and more reliable (yes, the HVAC controls are a nightmare).
However...
My 733i feels rock solid and is still a fun car to drive. I have never felt safer behind the wheel of a car. It cruises effortlessly at triple digit speeds (considerably quieter and more relaxed than the 3 was) and I never get tired of driving it.
Contrary to what "invader" has been posting repeatedly on the 7 series board, the 7 is far from the "UN-FUN" BMW. I have NEVER driven a BMW that was not fun to drive and that includes the lowly 320i sold in the US in the late 70s and early 80s, which remains my least favorite BMW, but still a class above many other cars.
I absolutely love my 733i and may eventually buy (in preferred order):
'85-'86 745i (egads! another E23!) or
'87-'88 535is or
'88-'89 635CSi
Ed
'84 733i (116K miles and loving it!)
'90 325is (sold to my nephew)
'88 325e (sold to a friend)
'87 325e (sold to a friend)
Others...
