I have a 86 735i and had the task of changing the starter a couple of times,
use a 17mm wrench have your local machine shop grind the head as small as possible without compomising the strength of the wrench, it's like a 1/4 turn at a time and take a few comfort breaks...you have to reach from the top right behind the manifold, you won't be able to see what you're doing it's all "feel" remove the top bolt (the difficult one) first as not to put any pressure on the bolt as you loosen, the bottom bolt is relatively easy to reach. I purchased a used starter that had a slight recess around that bolt, subsequently it may it very easy to use a box wrench for the job.Suggestion: Once you get the bolt out, have your local machine-shop cut two grooves in the top of the bolt to simulate a quasi phillips head screw, this way if you ever have to do this dreaded job again after you break the bolt with your 17mm wrench you can use a very long screwdriver from the front of the engine to turn down/up the bolt to the point of tight right before using the wrench....another thing; I found it helpful to remove some of the hoses in that area....it may mean draining out some coolant to keep things dry....lots of luck....Jerry
