I changed mine last night (83 733i) I used a cheap 17mm combo which I ground off half the box material so it fit, then bent about a 2" offset into the wrench, worked great. I left all the heater hoses installed, just moved them around. Took about two hours, including bending the wrench 3-4 times to get it right. Not a fun job.

Any tips on starter removal would be greatly appreciated. Inner bolt appears practically impossible to get at - is best way with a wrench from the back - or a socket from undernead the intake manifold - I can't seem to get it.
