I have a 1988 model year 735i (at least the plate under the hood in front of the radiator fan says so). The info tag inside the drivers-side door says the car is a 735iA USA manufactured in Germany in 5/87.

Do I have an E23 or E32?

I can't say for sure, knowing these facts only. But you can try to find the pictures of E23 & E32 on the web. Or e-mail me & I'll send you some pics(I have a lot of pics of different E23's). I am at Dennys@rambler.ru.
