Most e23's have fully hydraulic braking systems that are powered by the power steering pump which creates a positive pressure gradient in a fluid reserve cylinder called the nitrogen ball. When brakes are applied hydraulic force is released from the nitrogen ball to the master cylinder. If enough force is released the steering pump will have to repressurize the nitrogen ball thus exerting a greater load on your engine. Your idle should not significantly drop but it should sound a little different, and only for a second or two after brakes are applied. If your idle drops significantly: chech and/or adjust idle speed to spec., check braking system (sensors or nitrogen ball may need replacing).
