I personally have never used a "topside-suction" method for changing the oil or tranny fluid, simply because draining from the bottom allows any collected sediment to be discharged or better yet draining the pans via the plugs may alert you to the disposition of what's going on inside the engine or trannny ie: any strange looking metal chips etc.
In addition I allow for long drains from the bottom so any slow moving sludge can find it's way
out...sometimes I'll even jack the car up towards the drain side to allow every drop to drain.....Gravity is a wonderful thing!

Continuing my odyssey into caring for a 733i. A friend
with a contemporary 5-series uses a "topsider" suction
tool to remove old oil -- it certainly beats getting
underneath with a collection pan, much less messy!

Not sure if the dipstick tubes on an E23 go all the
way to the bottom of the oil and trans pans, though.
Has anyone used one successfully?

Ron H
