Tranny acting up when cold (archive)

In the mornings my 86 735i's auto transmission holds 1st gear till about 3500 rpm, then shifts kinda hard, then slips for a bit. Usually I can just put it into 2nd and continue. Once it warms up a bit - maybe 1-2 miles of driving, it runs strong and perfectly with no problems. It is the original ZF with 157,000 miles, fluid level fine, filter changed about 15,000 miles ago (due again).

Any ideas out there? Is this an indication the tranny is on its last legs? Thanks
