The problem may be very simple.
In my case it was the fuel hoses in the expansion tank (located on the left side, just inside the L rear panel, i.e., excatly on the opposite side of the spare tire).
The hoses were brittle and cracked, causing fuel to leak when the gas tank is full.
Drain the fuel completely, lower the gas tank, and change to new hoses.
Unless you live in the North with road salt, the fuel tank should last a long time.

The local dealer says gas tanks for '85 735i's are no longer available as OEM. I've had one on order from Bavarian Auto for nearly 6 weeks and no firm answer from them on delivery.
The price is $250. I found one from a distributor on the web with the right part number which was listed for a 733 of some year but cost much more. No luck in finding an after-market one. I'm thinking of having it welded. It's still, on the car and my mechanic thinks it's leaking as there's a gas odor when the tank is full but none when half full or less. Any suggestions?
