If it's on the housing, it's probably the anti-drain back valve that keeps the oil from draining back into the pan on shut down. If it's stuck or missing expect the oil pressure light to take longer to go out when you first start the engine.

I was changing my oil filter the other day and noticed that on the underside of the oil filter housing, where the oil canister bolts up to it, there is a spring loaded valve-type mechanism that is missing. This mechanism is about the size of a nickel in diameter and inserts into a hole in the filter housing. This hole is located between the center bolt (which tightens the housing to the canister) and the perimeter of the canister's rubber gasket. This hole can only be seen from the underside of the car.

Does anyone know what this valve-type mechanism does? Is it important?
