Just wanted to pass along a unique experience I had with my 86 735i today. I was an hour from home with my 11 month-old daughter when I suddenly experienced transmission problems (Only operating in third gear even with the manual selector in the 1 and 2 position, and a VERY hard clunk going into reverse) followed by a failure of the starter when I went to start the car. The really strange thing is that when I went to start the car the transmission mode selector switch would vibrate and click, and the starter would not turn over. As it turns out the problem was a small broken ground wire at the negative battery terminal. I caught it out of the corner of my eye by accident. This could have been a costly situation had I taken it to the dealer or a repair shop. Just thought everyone should know what happened in case you experience the same problem. I would recommend that you all do a quick inspection of the smaller electrical wires going to the battery terminals.
