That's the wiring harness that connects the solid state control unit (drivers side kick panel) to the actuator (the thing beside the battery). Within the rubber hose you will find a bunch of wires. I had 2 separate problems on mine. On my e28, some of the wires going into the actuator had corroded themselves off the circuit board. Resoldering them back cured that one. Taking the actuator apart is a tricky process but it can be done if you're curious and patient. On my 745 the controller had filled with water and was subsequently destroyed. Drying it out didn't fix it so I pulled the working one out of my e28 and plugged it in. What do you know, it worked. So I found a used one for $25 and was back in business. To prevent further water damage I relocated the controller under the dash.

Diagnosing a cruise control problem is tricky since your working with a number of components each communicating with each other via input and output signals. You just have to find where the communication has broken down. This is one place where being able to read a wiring schematic is useful.

Okay, that fuse was fine also... but the brake lights are now functioning. Switch at the pedal needed an adjustment and now brake lights work properly.

So, who wants to send me the 'book' on the cruise control? I found the unit next to the battery and note the connector going to the throttle assembly... but what's the black rubber hose with the red stripe leading into the firewall from the unit? ...just the protective cover for wiring to a relay under the interior cover panel, just beneath the steering wheel?
