The reservoir, hoses, and possibly the pump itself on my '84 733i power steering are leaking. Can anybody suggest a troubleshooting tree to follow? As in, how do I know it's not something major rather than just leaky hoses.

The first thing to do to find the leak is to clean the area with a grease remover like Gunk. When everything is dry, start the car and look for a leak. If none is seen, drive the car a couple miles and reinvestigate. This will pinpoint the leaks for you. I have found leaks on the return hoses from weak hose clamps and leaks from high pressure hoses from worn out crimp seals.
