You will need a gasket set to do a complete job. They run about $65 and have everything you will need for head gasket replacement, and maybe a few left over. But I would have a machine shop look at your head, because, as Lars said, it may be cracked, and the only way to really check it completely is to do it professionally, unless you have access to the machine. You will also need to machine the head. It may have warped, and this way it will be flush with the main engine block when you put it back on. If you plan on keeping the car, you may want to get a new head and just go from there. I have the same problem, my gasket is going, and they quoted for a complete redone head, it is $700, which included the complete head, not striped. I also have a #4 exhaust loab flat on my camshaft, so it will be much less expensive to just replace the whole thing for me. Consider this, and take what you need. I love my '84 733i. It is an awesome car. I aquired it after totalling my '77 320i. It has been a blessing even with the problems it has.
