I have a strange problem that just recently developed with my '84 733i. When I am driving, if I push the accelerator more than 3/4 of the way to the floor, the engine will suddenly lose all power until the RPM drops to about 1200 RPM then power will return. If I keep the accelerator floored, the engine will bounce between 1200 and 1800 RPM. I have full and strong engine response if I do not push the pedal more than 3/4 of the way down. When I first start the car cold, the engine will bounce between 1200 and 1800 RPM even when I barely press the accelerator. Then after about a minute all of a sudden I get the ability to rev past 1800 RPM but only still up to 3/4 accelerator travel. Note that the MPG gauge pegs at max while the engine is stalling back to the 1200 RPM then falls back to zero (it usually does not move otherwise since my circuit board is damaged from Ni-CAD batteries that leaked acid). This is now a consistent problem. This is really perplexing to me (and scary losing power while trying to get out of the way of someone!) Anyone have any suggestions?
