As far as I know it breaks down like this:

E24 (6 series)
E28 (5 series from 1982-1988)
E34 (5 series from 1989-1995)
E32 (7 series from 1988-1994)

The wheels from all of the above should fit an E23. I've been told that you should pay close attention to the overall width of the wheels and also how wide a tire you throw on there.

6 series had deeper wheelwells than the 7 I believe, hence the easy fitment of 255 and 275 series tires.
